Why a New Paradigm?
Over the past 12 to 18 months, we have seen a dramatic—almost seismic—change in the supply chain consulting industry. We have witnessed a significant decline in broad-based projects that typically entail long project timelines, multiple resources, open-ended deliverables, and blown budgets. Instead, the demand has been for specific skill sets to participate in intensive, short-term “projects” with well-defined deliverables; almost a hybrid of a staff augmentation and traditional consulting model.
Our assessment is that this trend is the result of the following:
- The volumes of information available today on the internet
- “Do it ourselves” mentality
- Low-cost independent contractors
- Re-hiring of staff positions for long term needs
- Exhaustive post-recession spending limitations
- Tired and worn consulting models

Our conclusion is that the “glory days” of consulting have passed and we must create and embrace a new paradigm if we are to exist in this industry.
